Rocketry Camp
Rocketry Camp is definitely one of the ways that children learn through fun. The camp is broken down into different activities. In-House Learning: While we understand that some of our children are academic phobic, we spend a small amount of time in a “loose classroom” setting. It is during this time that we gage the abilities of the children and set rules.
Solar System Learning: We teach children with colorful aids and videos about the different planets in our solar system, followed by the children drawing a map of the solar system.
- History of Flight: With the help of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang, we teach about the first time humankind took to the air with a heavier than air self powered vehicle. We also look at the boom of garage aviation and the hilarious results!!!
- History of Space Exploration: We examine how the Soviets beat the U.S.A. into space, but that we quickly followed with our own amazing journeys into space and also to the moon. As well as the history of African Americans in space travel.
Rocketry Building. Once we have gained an understanding as to the levels of the children we begin to build rockets to be launched. Each child is given two rockets to build and then launch.
Field Trips. All field trips are earned by the children through positive behavior. Last year our trips were as follows:
- E.A.A. Museum: This museum in Oshkosh Wisconsin becomes the busiest airport in the world during their annual fly in. Children are treated to a tour of the facility as well as time in the hands on museum.
- Adler Planetarium: This Chicago planetarium is the oldest in the western hemisphere. While here students are treated to time in the museum as well as two sky shows.
- Flights with Pastor Mitch: A friend of the center is a pilot and flies students for 15 minute flights in his Cessna airplane. For many children this is their first time in an airplane.
Arts/Crafts Camp
The idea behind arts/crafts camp was to expand the repertoire of activities that our children are interested in. To do this we provide low cost crafts and show children how to do them. Last year we did painting, drawing, mosaics and puzzle building. We also introduced the children to classical artists and their work while explaining the medium and technique. The camps last year culminated with trips to the Art Museum and the Betty Brinn Museum. This year we are offering the children an opportunity to be a part of the traditional arts/crafts camp, but are expanding them as well. Our expansion is aimed at those children who are normally not interested in arts/crafts activities (young men). This year to reach more boys with our arts/crafts camp we are going to be offering model building camp. This camp will be all about how to put together plastic models. This year the students will be putting together a model of a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.
Zoology Camp
Zoology camp is geared towards introducing children to the world of animals. As a part of the camp we will learn about various aspects of the animal kingdom. We are hoping that we will be able to find a private zoo, or society to do an animal presentation at the center, as well as teach the children about conservation and care of animals. The camp culminates with a trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo.
